How to Choose Your First Cigar

A plain-English guide to picking a first cigar — strength, wrapper, size and what to pair it with — so your first smoke is smooth, not harsh.

Walking into a humidor for the first time can feel like reading a wine list in another language. The good news: you only need to decide three things — strength, wrapper and size. Get those right and almost any well-made cigar will be enjoyable.

Start mild

Strength is mostly about nicotine. A full-bodied cigar on an empty stomach can leave even experienced smokers light-headed, so for a first cigar choose mild or mild-to-medium. You'll taste more, too: strong cigars can overwhelm the subtle flavors you're trying to discover.

Tip: strength and body aren't the same. Strength is how much nicotine you feel; body is how rich the flavor is. A cigar can be full-bodied but only medium in strength.

Pick a lighter wrapper

The wrapper — the outermost leaf — has a big effect on flavor.

  • Connecticut shade — pale gold, creamy and smooth. The classic first-cigar choice.
  • Habano — reddish-brown, a little spicier and richer.
  • Maduro — dark and oily, with sweeter notes of cocoa and coffee. Not always strong, but usually heavier.

If you're unsure, start with a Connecticut wrapper.

Go medium-sized

Size changes how long the cigar lasts and how it smokes:

  • Robusto (about 5 × 50) — 45–60 minutes. The best all-round starter.
  • Corona (about 5½ × 42–44) — slimmer and a bit more focused in flavor.
  • Toro (about 6 × 50–52) — a longer session, around 60–75 minutes.

Very thick cigars (60 ring gauge and up) burn cooler but take a long time; save them for later.

Pair it simply

Something to sip makes a first cigar more enjoyable. Coffee is a natural match for mild cigars; a light rum or a smooth bourbon works well once you move up in strength. Keep water nearby either way.

A few first-timer tips

  1. Cut just above the cap line — the seam near the head — so the wrapper doesn't unravel.
  2. Toast the foot over a soft flame without touching it, then draw gently while rotating.
  3. Don't inhale. Cigar smoke is for tasting, not for your lungs.
  4. Slow down. One puff every 30–60 seconds keeps it cool and flavorful.
  5. Let it go out when you're done — no need to stub it.
